Using a Hand-held GPS Unit in the Field

Saturday, April 17, 2010, 9:30AM - 4:30PM

If you love exploring the outdoors and have always wanted to know more about the basics of using a Global Positioning System (GPS) unit, this is the course for you. GPS technology is rapidly changing how outdoor enthusiasts find their way in unfamiliar country. With a hand-held GPS unit, you can store your starting point and other important locations in the unit when exploring, and easily find them again. And the latest advances in this technology actually allow you to follow your progress on topographic maps downloaded into the unit!

GPS is not a gimmick - it will radically change your attitude and confidence level when you are exploring new areas.

During each course, we will be teaching the following skills, which will be gained through a combination of instruction and practical exercises in the field: Basic knowledge of how GPS works through satellite technology; Using the main screens of a GPS unit; Entering and naming specific locations (waypoints), both on- and off-site; Navigating to waypoints; and Creating a route.

The cost of the course is $80.00, which includes: The loan of a Garmin Etrex Summit HC GPS unit and accessories; Personal instruction; GPS operating manual, map and instructions for practical exercises; Cold drinks and snacks; and Lunch.

Please contact us via e-mail (northriver@live.com) or phone (540-539-9873) to make a reservation.

Sporting Clays and Outdoor Training

We will re-open the sporting clays range in late March, once the snow has melted (or perhaps in August?). On Saturday, May 22, sporting clays expert John Alexander will hold morning and afternoon shooting clinics at North River Retreat. Whether participants are beginners or experts, it’s always amazing to see the progress they make under John’s instruction. We provide shotguns and safety equipment at these clinics at no additional charge. Please contact us if you wish to make an early reservation.

Families and friends are also invited to rent the clays range for a morning or afternoon.

This fall, we plan for Forester Dave Warner to lead a nature hike through the NRR property, explaining how to identify various hardwood and softwood tree species, as well as their benefit to people, wildlife and the environment. He will also point out invasive species that are rapidly becoming a part of the landscape. After lunch, participants can relax at the cabin or try their luck at catching trout from our well-stocked pond

Spring Gobbler Hunting

Spring gobbler season opens on Monday, April 26 and runs through May 22. We are fully booked the first part of the season, but we have openings after the second week. Please contact us if you are interested in an exciting hunt for the smartest bird in the woods!

We have also totally re-organized our bow hunting program for 2010.

Most bow hunters prefer to hunt on their own and often for more than 1-2 days at a time. Therefore, we plan to lease NRR lands to bow hunters (for deer only) on a weekly basis during the 2010 archery season, as follows:

In order to avoid hunter interference and to ensure for a quality hunt, NRR lands will be leased to a single group of bow hunters during each week (“lease group”).  A lease group can be from 1-5 persons, such as family members or friends wishing to hunt together.

Reservations will be taken on a first-come, first served basis. Weekly leases will include the one-week early (September) archery season. Once the regular archery season begins in October, we will lease for 5 consecutive weeks. In summary, there will be a total of 6 one-week lease periods. The last lease will end after hunting on the last Saturday before the regular firearms season begins.

Each weekly lease will begin on Sunday and end on Saturday (6 hunting days, with Sunday used for scouting). The first Sunday of a lease period, we will provide lunch, distribute gate keys and maps, register group members and show them the property. All groups may scout the NRR property before and after the September lease period and prior to the first lease period in October. Otherwise, scouting may only be done by groups during their authorized lease period.

Groups are free to use existing tree stands and to check NRR trail camera photos periodically to determine the best hunting locations.  All hunters hunting from any tree stand on NRR property must wear safety harnesses.

Each group will have exclusive bow hunting rights on lands owned or leased by NRR. We reserve the right to take clients on other activities, such as quail hunting or firearms hunting for deer during the 2-day late October antlerless season. However, we work hard to make certain that disturbance to each group is kept to a minimum.

We will have up to 10 feeders working during the lease periods, except for the earliest (September antlerless) lease period.  We also plan to have food plots planted in the spring with corn and sorghum. As a new initiative, we plan to have barley and turnips planted in September.

The undeveloped campground along the North River will be available for a group to set up a tent or camper at no charge during the lease. Trout fishing in the pond below the cabin will also be available at no charge (and no license required).

During the regular archery season, we ask that each hunter harvest no more than one antlered deer. Antlerless deer may be taken in accordance with regulations established by West Virginia DNR. No wild turkey or bear hunting is allowed.

Weeks for bow hunting prior to the general firearms season in 2009 were as follows:

Week 1: Sunday, September 13 – Saturday, September 19 (early antlerless season)

Week 2: Sunday, October 18 through Saturday, October 24

Week 3: Sunday, October 25 – Saturday, October 31.

Week 4: Sunday, November 1 – Saturday, November 7.

Week 5: Sunday, November 8 – Saturday November 14.

Week 6: Sunday, November 15 – Saturday November 21

Monday, November 23, 2009: General firearms season began.

We expect that these dates will be similar in 2010.

The price for each weekly lease will be $700 per week for each lease group of 1-5 hunters, except for the week during the early September season, where the price is $500. A deposit of $250 is required from a lease group to reserve a particular week, refundable up to one month before the lease begins.

Additional Information

Trout fishing in the pond below the cabin will be available during the spring and again in the fall. You may also want to check our undeveloped campsite by the North River.

As for other changes, increasing costs have required us to nominally raise base prices for quail hunting in 2010. All prices are noted in this website. A reminder to everyone that a 6% West Virginia sales tax is added to each bill.

I will again be asking each client to consider a small voluntary donation to the Cacapon and Lost Rivers Land Trust (http://www.cacapon.org/) to help protect lands like North River Retreat from development in the future.  Because of your generosity in 2009, I was able to send a check to the Trust for almost $500 at the end of 2009. Again, this is voluntary only, and clients can “opt out” with no questions asked.

Don’t forget – although our mailing address is in Winchester, North River Retreat is physically located in Hampshire County, West Virginia, near Delray. We are only about an hour from Winchester as you take Route 50 west past Capon Bridge and Hanging Rock, turning left (south) on Route 29.

That’s it for now. Arlene and I would like to wish you the very best in 2010,  hoping that God’s Peace will surround you in the coming year.
